Best time of year for a team offsite in Bandipur

Bandipur is roughly 220 km from Bangalore, about 4 to 5 hours by road depending on your starting point. The experience you get varies a lot by season, so timing your offsite well saves you from bad weather, blocked roads or overpriced weekends. Here is what each part of the year actually looks like on the ground.

October to February: The most reliable window

This is when Bandipur works best for a corporate group. Temperatures stay between 15 and 28 degrees Celsius, mornings are cool, and the forest is dry enough that wildlife sightings during the safari are reasonably frequent. Your team will be comfortable in the open jeeps and on any outdoor activity you plan. Bookings fill up fast from November onward, especially around long weekends. Plan at least 6 to 8 weeks ahead and lock in resort rates early. Mid-week departures are cheaper and less crowded than Friday evening convoys from Bangalore.

March to May: Warm but workable

By March the temperature climbs, hitting 35 degrees Celsius or above in April and May. Afternoon outdoor sessions become uncomfortable, and you will need to restructure your agenda around early morning and evening slots. Wildlife actually concentrates around water sources in these months, so safaris can be quite good. Resort rates tend to soften slightly compared to peak season. If your team is mostly doing indoor workshops with one or two outdoor activities, this period is fine. Just confirm that the resort has reliable air conditioning and arrange the safari for 6 am rather than later in the day.

June to September: The monsoon months

The forest receives significant rainfall from June through September. The Mysore-Ooty highway, which is your main route from Bangalore, can get slow and occasionally disrupted. The Bandipur Tiger Reserve itself is closed to tourists during the monsoon, which means no safaris at all during this period. A few resorts operate through the monsoon and offer lower rates. If your offsite is primarily indoor, focused on team workshops or leadership programmes, you can make it work. But if any part of the value comes from the jungle setting and wildlife experience, skip these months entirely.

Long weekends and peak holiday periods: A note on planning

Dussehra, Diwali and the December to January holiday stretch push demand sharply across all Bandipur properties. Rates at good resorts can go up by 30 to 50 percent compared to regular weekdays, and availability disappears quickly. Ooty-bound tourist traffic also slows the highway considerably on these dates. If your HR calendar is tied to a long weekend, book at least 10 to 12 weeks out and get written confirmation of rates. If you have flexibility, a Tuesday to Thursday slot in October or November gives you good weather, reasonable pricing and a much calmer drive.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Bandipur Tiger Reserve open throughout the year for safaris?

No. The reserve is closed to tourists during the monsoon, typically June through September, to allow the forest to recover. Safaris operate from October to May. Always confirm the exact dates with the forest department before finalising your offsite schedule, as closure dates can shift slightly year to year.

How far in advance should we book a Bandipur offsite for a group of 30 to 50 people?

For October to February, book at least 8 weeks ahead, more if you are targeting a long weekend. For March to May you have a little more room, but quality properties still fill up. Leaving it to 2 to 3 weeks before the date usually means you are choosing from whatever is left, which limits your options on room configuration and group activity slots.

What is a reasonable per-head budget for a two-night Bandipur offsite?

It depends on the property tier and what is included, but for a decent mid-range resort with meals, one safari and a basic activity session, you are generally looking at somewhere between Rs 6,000 and Rs 12,000 per person per night all-inclusive. Premium properties with private cottages and curated programmes sit higher than this. We can give you a tighter number once we know your group size and dates.

Are there any road or travel considerations the HR team should know about?

The Mysore-Ooty highway passes through the reserve, and vehicles are not permitted on that stretch after dusk due to wildlife movement. This is a firm rule, not a guideline. Make sure your group departs Bangalore early enough to clear the forest zone before evening. We factor this into all our Bandipur itineraries, but it is worth briefing your leadership team so nobody expects a late checkout and a leisurely drive back.
