A 2-3 day team offsite itinerary for Kodaikanal
Kodaikanal is about 460 km from Bangalore, typically 8 to 9 hours by road or a short flight to Madurai followed by a 3-hour drive. It works well for 2-night or 3-night groups who want cooler air, manageable travel, and enough space to actually disconnect. Here are itinerary frameworks we use most often for Bangalore tech and services teams.
Get a proposalGetting There and First Evening
Most groups leave Bangalore early Friday morning by tempo traveller or a small bus fleet. You reach Kodaikanal by late afternoon, which gives people time to settle in, have a warm dinner together, and do a short informal icebreaker. We usually keep Day 1 light on programming. A bonfire or a guided star-gazing session works well here because Kodai's elevation and clear nights make it genuinely good, not just a check-box activity. If your team is flying, Madurai airport is the nearest option. Coordinate the Madurai to Kodaikanal leg carefully because the ghat road takes longer than maps suggest, especially after rain.
Day 2: Outdoor Activities and Team Sessions
This is the main working day. A typical schedule runs an outdoor activity block in the morning, a structured team session or workshop after lunch indoors, and free time or a group walk in the evening. For outdoor blocks, Kodaikanal offers trekking to Dolphin's Nose or Pillar Rocks, cycling around the lake, and nature walks through pine and shola forest patches. None of these require high fitness, which matters when you have a mixed group. For the indoor session, most properties we work with can set up a basic conference room. Projector, whiteboard, stable WiFi in some properties but confirm in advance because coverage varies by location. We advise keeping the formal session to 3 to 4 hours maximum and finishing by 5 PM so the evening stays relaxed.
Day 3: Wrap-Up and Departure
On a 3-night trip, Day 3 can hold a half-day activity like a cooking session using local Kodai produce, a photography walk, or a team challenge around the lake area. These work better in the morning before checkout. If you are on a 2-night plan, Day 3 is mostly breakfast, checkout, and the drive back, reaching Bangalore by evening. We recommend building in a buffer of at least 45 minutes on the departure schedule. The ghat descent to Dindigul or Palani can slow down significantly if there is traffic or mist, particularly in the June to September window.
Accommodation Options by Group Size
For groups of 20 to 35 people, private bungalow-style homestay clusters work well and give you a more contained, exclusive feel. Rates for decent options typically run in the range of 2,500 to 5,000 INR per person per night including meals, depending on season and property standard. For larger groups of 40 to 80, you will need a proper resort property with multiple room blocks and a banquet hall. Peak season is April to June and October to November. Rates go up noticeably during these months and availability tightens, so plan at least 6 to 8 weeks in advance. The off-season months of July and August are cheaper but expect cold, wet weather and some days where outdoor activities are not practical.

Frequently asked questions
How far in advance should a Bangalore company book a Kodaikanal offsite?
For groups above 30 people, 6 to 8 weeks minimum is a safe lead time, especially during April to June or the October to November window. Smaller groups can sometimes move faster but good properties still fill up quickly on long weekends. The earlier you confirm, the more negotiating room you have on rates.
Is Kodaikanal suitable for offsites that include full-day work sessions?
It works if you pick the right property. Confirm WiFi speed and backup power before signing anything because both vary. Most properties can arrange a projector and whiteboard. We generally advise limiting formal work sessions to half the day and using the rest for outdoor or group activity, otherwise teams might as well have stayed in Bangalore.
What is the approximate per-person budget for a 2-night Kodaikanal offsite from Bangalore?
A reasonable all-in estimate covering transport, accommodation with meals, one or two group activities, and basic event coordination is roughly 8,000 to 14,000 INR per person for a group of 30 to 50. It goes up if you choose a higher-end resort or add more structured activities. It comes down with larger group sizes due to better transport and accommodation rates.
Are there any months to avoid for a Kodaikanal team offsite?
July and August bring heavy monsoon rain to the Palani Hills and the ghat roads can get tricky. Outdoor activities are largely off the table for days at a stretch. It is not impossible to run an offsite then but you need to plan mostly for indoor programming and accept that the weather may not cooperate. December to February is cold, which some teams enjoy, but pack accordingly.
