How to plan a corporate offsite in Kumarakom
Kumarakom works well for Bangalore teams that want proper downtime without a long haul. The backwaters keep people off their phones, the weather is manageable for most of the year, and you can structure two or three days without the itinerary feeling forced. Here is what you need to know before you book anything.
Get a proposalGetting there from Bangalore
Kumarakom is roughly 250 km from Bangalore. Most teams fly Bangalore to Kochi, which takes about an hour, then drive 60 to 75 minutes to Kumarakom. Total door-to-door time is around 3 to 4 hours depending on traffic out of Kochi. If your team is 15 people or fewer, a direct road trip in a tempo traveller is possible. It takes 7 to 8 hours via NH 544, so only consider it if your budget is tight and the team is comfortable with a long drive.
Where to stay
The mainstream choice is one of the larger lake-facing resorts. They have enough rooms for groups of 20 to 60, conference halls, and catering handled in-house. Rates for a standard room with meals included typically run from Rs 8,000 to Rs 18,000 per person per night depending on the property and season. October to February is peak, so expect higher rates and earlier sold-out dates during that period.
Agenda and activities
A two-night, three-day offsite structure works best here. Day one is travel and a light evening session, typically a team dinner on the water. Day two is your heaviest programme, a half-day workshop in the morning, a structured activity in the afternoon such as a canoe relay, village walk or cooking session, then an open evening. Day three is a short morning review and checkout before the afternoon flight.
Budget planning
A reasonable all-in budget for a Kumarakom offsite, covering flights, accommodation with meals, transfers and one or two activities, is Rs 25,000 to Rs 45,000 per person for two nights. The wide range exists because flight costs vary significantly and resort pricing has a steep peak-season premium. Get a group air quote before finalising your dates, as that single line item often decides the overall budget.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best time of year for a Kumarakom offsite from Bangalore?
October to February is the most comfortable weather-wise, with clear skies and cool evenings. March to May is hot but manageable indoors. June to September is monsoon season, the backwaters look beautiful but outdoor activities are off the table and some venues partially close. If your dates fall in the monsoon window, confirm with the property what their cancellation and rescheduling terms are.
How many people is Kumarakom suitable for?
It works best for groups of 15 to 60. Below 15 you can consider a houseboat cluster. Above 60, the larger resorts can accommodate the numbers but venue space for plenary sessions gets tight and the logistics of moving a large group around the backwaters becomes slow. For groups above 80 it is usually better to look at Alleppey or a resort campus with more flat space.
Is connectivity good enough for a working offsite?
The main lake resorts have decent Wi-Fi in the conference areas, but do not count on reliable connectivity in the rooms or on the water. If your offsite involves live product demos, customer calls or anything that needs a stable connection, test the venue's bandwidth in advance or arrange a dedicated line. For most standard workshops and strategy sessions, what the properties offer is sufficient.
How far in advance should we book?
For October to January, book at least 6 to 8 weeks out, earlier if your group is above 40 people. For February to September, 3 to 4 weeks is usually enough. Weekends book faster than weekdays regardless of season. If you have a fixed date driven by a company calendar event, lock the venue first and sort the agenda after.
