Treemonks

A 2-3 day team offsite itinerary for Kumarakom

Kumarakom is about 530 km from Bangalore, roughly 9 to 10 hours by road or a short flight to Kochi followed by a 90-minute drive. It is quiet, unhurried, and genuinely different from the usual Coorg or Chikmagalur circuit, which makes it work well for teams that need a proper reset.

Getting There and First Evening

Most Bangalore teams fly into Kochi and pick up a chartered vehicle to Kumarakom. Flights run under an hour and are available from both terminals. If your group is under 12 people, a Tempo Traveller from Kochi airport works fine. Larger groups can split across two vehicles. Plan to reach the resort by late afternoon. First evening is best kept light. A houseboat sundowner, a short backwater cruise, or simply dinner at the resort with a bonfire setup is enough. Resist the temptation to schedule a team activity on arrival night. People are tired and the backwaters do the work for you.

Day 2: The Core Offsite Day

This is your full working and activity day. A typical structure: half-day facilitated session in the morning, 90-minute lunch break, then one team activity in the afternoon. Morning sessions work well here because the cool water air keeps energy up. Treemonks can arrange a meeting room or open-air pavilion setup with projector, whiteboards, and catering. For afternoon activities, options in Kumarakom include houseboat team challenges, kayaking or canoe races on the backwaters, village walks through Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary area, or a Kerala cooking session at the resort. Cooking works particularly well for mixed seniority groups because it levels the hierarchy quickly. End the evening with a cultural programme, Kathakali or a Chenda drumming session, arranged at the resort.

Day 3: Departure Day Options

If you are doing a 3-day itinerary, keep Day 3 morning free for optional activities before checkout. Some teams use this for an informal retrospective breakfast, a short boat ride, or Ayurvedic consultation sessions that many Kumarakom resorts offer. These are usually available at the resort for an additional cost per person. Checkout is typically by 11 am to 12 noon. You can reach Kochi airport comfortably for afternoon flights back to Bangalore. If the team has time, a quick stop in Kochi at the Fort Kochi waterfront adds 2 hours but is worth it for groups visiting Kerala for the first time.

Where to Stay and What It Costs

Kumarakom has a clear split between premium lakeside resorts and mid-range properties set slightly inland. For corporate groups, the better-known lakeside properties run from around Rs 8,000 to Rs 18,000 per room per night depending on season, with December to February being peak and the most expensive. Monsoon, June to September, is off-peak, cheaper, and honestly beautiful on the backwaters if your team does not mind humidity. Most resorts here are small by Goa or Coorg standards, typically 20 to 50 rooms. So if your group is above 40 people, you will likely need to block the entire property or split across two. Treemonks negotiates group rates and handles F&B minimums, which most properties insist on. A 2-night group package including accommodation, all meals, one houseboat cruise, and basic AV setup generally works out to Rs 14,000 to Rs 22,000 per person depending on property tier and group size.

Frequently asked questions

Is Kumarakom suitable for large groups of 80 to 100 people?

It is manageable but needs careful planning. Most individual properties here are small, so you will either need to block two adjacent resorts or look at the few larger retreat properties near Vembanad Lake. Treemonks handles this coordination regularly. Logistics like transfers and houseboat capacity need to be scaled up separately.

What is the best time of year for a Kumarakom offsite from Bangalore?

October to February is the most comfortable weather-wise and popular for this reason. March to May is warm and humid but manageable. Monsoon, June to September, brings rain but also the greenest, most dramatic version of the backwaters. Rates drop significantly in monsoon and some teams specifically prefer the atmosphere, though outdoor activities get limited.

Can we combine a houseboat stay with resort accommodation?

Yes, and it works well for 2-night itineraries. A common format is one night on a houseboat and one night at a resort, or a daytime houseboat cruise with both nights at the resort. Overnight houseboats have AC bedrooms and attached bathrooms and fit groups of 6 to 20 depending on the vessel. For larger groups, multiple houseboats travel together.

How far in advance should we book for a group of 25 to 30 people?

For peak season, October to February, aim for 6 to 8 weeks minimum. Good properties fill up fast and F&B minimums get locked early. For off-peak travel, 3 to 4 weeks is usually sufficient. Last-minute bookings are possible but you lose negotiating room on rates and get limited choice on activity slots.
