Two nights and three days is the standard that works. Day one is arrival and a light settling-in session. Day two carries the full programme. Day three wraps up by noon so people are back in Bangalore by evening. One night is too tight. You spend the first evening just decompressing and then it is over. Three nights works well for larger groups doing a formal strategy exercise, but most leadership teams of eight to twenty people do not need more than two nights.
What a working day at the retreat should look like
Keep mornings for the hard work, roughly 9 am to 1 pm. Leadership alignment, strategy reviews, honest conversations about what is not working. People are fresh and there are fewer distractions than in a Bangalore office. Afternoons should be lighter. A heritage walk in the old city, a cooking session, a short workshop on something outside the usual work context. Evenings are for informal dinner and conversation. Do not schedule formal sessions after 7 pm. They do not go well.
Choosing the right venue in Mysore
You have two broad categories. Boutique heritage properties inside or near the city, and resort properties on the outskirts towards Coorg or Nagarhole. Heritage properties give you the Mysore atmosphere and are easier for short city experiences. Resorts give you more outdoor space and are better if your group wants activities like cycling or nature walks. For a leadership group, a property with private meeting rooms is non-negotiable. Check that the AV setup is reliable before you confirm. Many properties have a nice boardroom on paper but patchy internet. Ask for a video call test during site inspection.
Budget expectations for a Bangalore company
For a two-night leadership retreat in Mysore, plan for roughly Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 per person for accommodation, all meals and the venue hire for sessions. This range covers decent properties. Heritage bungalows and premium resorts sit above this band. Add separately for facilitators if you are bringing in an external one, for any off-site experiences like a palace dinner or a guided heritage tour, and for travel. Most Bangalore companies book a tempo traveller or a fleet of cabs depending on group size. Budget Rs 3,000 to Rs 5,000 per person for transport both ways at current rates.

Six to eight weeks is comfortable for most dates. October to February is peak season in Mysore and good properties fill up. If you are targeting a long weekend or a holiday period, book ten to twelve weeks ahead. Last-minute bookings under two weeks are possible but your venue choice shrinks considerably.
Should we hire an external facilitator or run it internally?
Depends on what you want to achieve. If the agenda is mostly information sharing and planning, an internal lead works fine. If you need honest conversations about team dynamics, leadership gaps or strategic disagreements, an external facilitator is worth the cost. They take the pressure off one person to simultaneously run the room and participate in it.
What is a reasonable group size for a leadership retreat in Mysore?
Eight to eighteen people is a workable range. Below eight and it can feel intense in an uncomfortable way. Above twenty and the group dynamics in sessions become harder to manage without a structured facilitation design. If your leadership team is larger, consider splitting into workstreams for parts of the programme.
Can we combine a leadership retreat with a team outing for the wider company?
You can, but keep the two programmes separate. A common structure is a leadership retreat from Sunday to Tuesday followed by a full company outing from Friday to Sunday the same week. Mixing the groups and the objectives in a single trip usually dilutes both. Leaders need space to have frank conversations that are harder in a larger mixed group.
