Structuring a leadership retreat in Nandi Hills
Nandi Hills is about 60 kilometres from central Bangalore, roughly an hour and a half by road in early morning traffic. That distance is enough to pull senior leaders away from the office without burning a full day in transit. Here is how to structure the two days so the time is actually well spent.
Get a proposalDay one: travel, check-in and the working session
Leave Bangalore by 7 AM. You arrive before the heat sets in, breakfast is done at the property, and you can start the first working session by 10 AM with everyone reasonably fresh. Keep this session to three hours. Use it for the one agenda item that genuinely needs everyone in the same room, usually a strategy review or a difficult people or org conversation. Trying to pack more than one big topic into the morning session is where most leadership retreats lose their shape. After lunch, give people two hours that are unscheduled. A short hike, a nap, a walk around the property. This is not filler. Senior leaders rarely get time to think without an agenda in front of them, and the informal conversations that happen in those two hours are often more useful than the structured ones. Resume with a lighter session at 4 PM, no more than 90 minutes, focused on decisions and owners coming out of the morning discussion.
Day two: alignment and close-out
Start day two with a 90-minute session before breakfast gets heavy. Energy is better, phones are quieter. Use this slot for cascade planning, how will this team communicate decisions downward, and what commitments are each leader taking back to their function. Write these down in the room, not later. Close by noon. A half-day debrief after a full day of offsite conversation tends to go in circles. Lunch together, then depart. Most groups are back in Bangalore by 3 PM, which is early enough that people do not feel they have lost a full working day on travel.
Choosing the right property at Nandi Hills
There are properties in the 3,000 to 6,000 INR per person per night range that work well for groups of 8 to 20 people. What matters more than star rating is a dedicated conference room with natural light, reliable Wi-Fi, and the ability to do outdoor sessions on the property. Check that the property can handle all meals in-house. Sending a group of 15 leaders out to a restaurant for every meal kills momentum. For groups under 12, a private villa or bungalow often works better than a hotel. You get a common area that stays yours for the full duration, no lobby distractions, and the kitchen can usually be arranged for team dinners. Budget around 30,000 to 50,000 INR per night for a villa that sleeps 10 to 12 comfortably.
Facilitation and structure: what to decide before you book
The retreat structure only works if you decide in advance who is facilitating and whether that person is internal or external. An internal facilitator, usually the CHRO or a senior HR business partner, works fine for strategy conversations where the group trusts each other. For conversations involving org changes, leadership team dynamics, or performance accountability, an external facilitator is worth the cost, typically 25,000 to 60,000 INR for two days depending on experience. Send participants a one-page pre-read three days before the retreat, not a 40-slide deck. State the outcomes you are trying to reach, not just the topics. If people arrive without context, the first session becomes orientation rather than work.

Frequently asked questions
How many people does a Nandi Hills leadership retreat typically work for?
It works best for groups of 8 to 20 people. Below 8, you can usually do the same conversation in a Bangalore boardroom. Above 20, the group dynamics in plenary sessions become harder to manage and you need a larger venue with proper breakout rooms, which limits options in the Nandi Hills area.
What is a realistic total budget per person for a two-day retreat?
For a mid-range property with all meals included, facilitation, and activity costs, plan for 8,000 to 15,000 INR per person for the two days. This does not include travel from Bangalore, which is usually covered separately by the company. Premium properties or an external facilitator will push the number higher.
Do we need a team-building activity or is that optional?
It is optional, and for senior leadership groups it is often skipped entirely without any loss. If you do include one, keep it short, under two hours, and make it physical rather than gamified. A guided trek in the Nandi Hills area takes about 90 minutes and does not require anyone to pretend they are enjoying a trust fall. It also works well in the unscheduled afternoon slot on day one.
How far in advance should we book the property?
For weekends, book at least four to six weeks out. Good properties in the Nandi Hills area, especially private villas, fill up quickly on Fridays and Saturdays. Weekday retreats give you more flexibility and are usually 10 to 20 percent cheaper. A Tuesday to Wednesday retreat also tends to get better attendance than one that bleeds into a weekend.
