A 2-3 day team offsite itinerary for Thekkady

Thekkady is about 270 km from Bangalore, roughly 6 to 7 hours by road depending on traffic at the Ghat sections. It works well for a long weekend offsite, gives teams a genuine change of scene, and is manageable without a flight.

Getting There and Setting a Base

Most Bangalore teams drive down on a Friday evening or leave early Saturday morning. The route goes through Mysuru and Kumily. Buses are available but for a corporate group, a hired tempo traveller or a set of SUVs is more practical and keeps the group together. Kumily town is where most hotels sit. From there, Periyar Tiger Reserve and the lake are about 4 km away. Book rooms early if you are going on a long weekend. Mid-range options run roughly Rs 3,000 to Rs 6,000 per room per night. Larger plantation resorts outside town are quieter and better suited for offsite work sessions.

Day 1: Arrival and Settling In

Plan to arrive by early afternoon if you left Bangalore at dawn, or by evening if you travelled overnight. Keep Day 1 light. A short bamboo rafting session on Periyar Lake or a spice plantation walk takes about 2 hours and does not require early morning starts. These work as informal icebreakers without feeling forced. Evening is a good time for the team dinner at the resort or a local restaurant in Kumily. Kadala curry, appam, and fresh pepper chicken are standard and good. If you want a structured activity in the evening, a Kalaripayattu demonstration can usually be arranged through your hotel with a day's notice.

Day 2: The Main Activity Day

This is your full day. A morning nature walk inside the Periyar Reserve needs advance booking through the Forest Department. Slots fill up, so Treemonks handles this ahead of time. The Border Hiking programme is the most popular for corporate groups, roughly 4 hours, not strenuous, and guides from the Eco Development Committee lead it. It counts as a genuine team activity without being a manufactured team-building exercise. Afternoon can be kept for the work or planning session. Plantation resorts typically have a hall or open lawn that works for this. Post-lunch, energy is lower anyway, so a 90-minute working session here is more productive than trying to do it in Bangalore between meetings. Evening can be a bonfire and free time.

3-Day Extension: Munnar Add-On or Deeper Periyar

If you have three days, you have two options. One is to extend in Thekkady and add activities like spice market visits in Kumily, cooking workshops, or a full-day jungle patrol programme. The other is to drive up to Munnar on Day 3, which is about 90 km and 2.5 hours from Kumily. Tea estate walks and the cooler weather make it a worthwhile addition. For most Bangalore teams with Monday back at work, the 2-night format is more practical. Three nights works better for teams that have a genuine strategy retreat agenda and need the extra working session. Either way, plan your return drive so you are not hitting Mysuru after 8 PM on a Sunday.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time of year for a Thekkady offsite from Bangalore?

October to February is the most comfortable. Temperatures stay mild and the forest is green after the monsoon. Avoid peak summer in April and May if your team is not used to the heat. The monsoon months of June to August see heavy rain on the Ghats and can disrupt driving, so we generally advise against those months for a first-time group.

How much should we budget per person for a 2-night Thekkady offsite?

A rough all-in figure including transport, accommodation, meals, and activities is Rs 8,000 to Rs 14,000 per person for a group of 15 to 25 people. The range depends mostly on your hotel choice and whether you pick a basic resort or a plantation property. Activity costs inside Periyar are modest since the Forest Department programmes are not expensive.

Can we do a proper work session or strategy day during the offsite?

Yes, and Thekkady is actually decent for this. Plantation resorts have open lawns and indoor halls that can be set up for presentations or workshops. There is no real conference centre, so if you need AV equipment, projectors, or reliable high-speed internet, confirm this with the property in advance. We check this when we do site bookings.

How do we book the Forest Department activities inside Periyar Reserve?

Periyar Tiger Reserve activities like the Border Hiking and Bamboo Rafting programmes are managed by the Eco Development Committee and have limited daily slots. They cannot be booked at the last minute for a large group. Treemonks handles these advance bookings as part of the offsite planning so your slots are confirmed before the team travels.
