Structuring a leadership retreat in Yelagiri
Yelagiri is about 160 km from Bangalore, roughly a 3 to 3.5 hour drive on NH48 via Krishnagiri. It is quiet, the weather stays cool, and there is almost no mobile network in parts of the hills, which is actually useful when you want people off their phones and in the room. For a leadership group of 8 to 25 people, it works well as a 2-night offsite.

The cleanest option is a hired tempo traveller or two from Bangalore, departing by 6.30 am on Day 1. You arrive before lunch, people are not exhausted, and you skip the midday traffic out of the city. Avoid Friday evening departures if anyone in the group is driving from Electronic City or Whitefield, the Hosur stretch can add 90 minutes. If a few participants are driving independently, plan a common meeting point at the Krishnagiri toll. Yelagiri has no train station. The nearest is Jolarpettai, about 15 km from the hills, and a cab from there is easy to arrange in advance.
Choosing the right venue
Yelagiri has a handful of mid-range resorts and a few smaller homestay-style properties. For a leadership retreat you generally want a property with a dedicated conference room, not just a clearing a lawn chair off the lawn. Check that the projector and sound system are actually working before you confirm. Properties like Nature Zone and Sanjay Resort have handled corporate groups before and can manage full board, which keeps the agenda clean. Room count matters. Leadership groups often include senior people who will not share rooms. Confirm the number of single occupancy rooms early. Rates at decent properties run roughly Rs 3,500 to Rs 6,000 per person per night on full board, depending on group size and season.
Structuring the two-and-a-half days
Day 1 afternoon is best used for a short check-in activity and the first working session. People are still in travel mode in the morning, so do not schedule anything that requires deep thinking before 3 pm. A 90-minute strategy conversation works well here, followed by a group dinner with no agenda. Day 2 is your full working day. A morning session of 2.5 to 3 hours, a proper lunch break with at least one outdoor activity, then an afternoon session of 2 hours, and an evening that is entirely social. Day 3 morning is good for closing decisions and action items. Wrap by 11 am so the drive back to Bangalore clears the Krishnagiri toll before the Sunday traffic builds.
What to sort out before you go
Get the facilitator confirmed at least three weeks out. If you are using an external facilitator, share the retreat goals with them early so they are not designing sessions on the drive up. Print all materials in Bangalore because printing in Yelagiri is not reliable. Carry cash. Several properties in Yelagiri have unreliable card machines. Budget a small contingency for activities like a nature walk or cycling, which are typically charged separately by local operators at around Rs 200 to Rs 400 per person. Also confirm the property has a generator. Power cuts in the hills are common, especially in the evening.

Frequently asked questions
Is Yelagiri suitable for a leadership retreat or is it better for a casual team outing?
It works well for both, but the quietness and limited connectivity actually make it better suited for a focused leadership offsite than a high-energy team outing. If your group wants activities like ziplining or a big party night, Yelagiri is not the right pick. If they need two days away from screens and office politics to think clearly, it is a good fit.
How much should we budget per person for a 2-night retreat in Yelagiri?
A reasonable all-in budget is Rs 12,000 to Rs 18,000 per person, covering transport from Bangalore, full board accommodation, basic activities and a facilitator split across the group. If you are bringing a senior external facilitator, that cost sits separately and can vary considerably. Treemonks can give you a specific quote once we know group size and dates.
What is the best time of year to go?
October to February is the most comfortable window. The weather is pleasant and the hills are clear. March to May gets warm but is manageable. Avoid the peak monsoon months of June and July because the road up to Yelagiri can get slippery and some properties reduce services during that period.
